Two Auxiliarists Aid Boater - Update

/Boating PR News/ - PERTH AMBOY, NJ, June 13, 2005 - Four members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in New Jersey utilized their training and skills to save a boater's life earlier this week.

Two men, while fishing in the Raritan Bay, were injured after their boat collided with a barge and capsized near Perth Amboy, New Jersey on Wednesday (June 8).

Members of the Auxiliary were concluding a training patrol mission and heading back to port when they heard a Mayday call on their radio.

After arriving at the scene and seeing only Michael Yatsko floating in a life ring, another call was placed on the radio to find the position of the second victim, Richard Yatsko, Michael's uncle, in dire need of medical attention, had been pulled from the water into a nearby small recreational fishing boat by an off-duty police officer.

The auxiliary vessel with Coxswain George Reilly and crew Sal Ruggierio, Jim Crincoli and trainee Liz Hricko, pulled up next to the recreational boat to assess Richard Yatsko's condition, who they found was not breathing and turning purple.

Crincoli and Hricko put the recreational boat into a side tow to bring Richard Yatsko to shore where EMT and ambulances were waiting. While being towed in the recreational boat with the victim, Ruggierio and Reilly provided first aid resuscitation to Richard Yatsko. After Reilly and Ruggierio got Richard Yatsko breathing on his own and speaking at the dock, he was transported in critical condition to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Hospital in Newark. A hospital spokesperson stated Mr. Yatsko was discharged on 9 June.

Michael Yatsko was taken in stable condition to Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy by a New York City Police Department Marine Unit. A hospital spokesperson reported that Mr. Yatsko was not admitted.

The Coast Guard has begun an investigation into the accident.
